Charles III, an ecological king?

Charles III has long been an ardent supporter of the environment. He wants to make this one of the main challenges of his reign.

Le Roi Charles III

King Chales III has always been committed to the environment. Indeed, his first major environmental speech was in 1970. At the time he was Prince of Wales, he denounced the devastating effects that pollution could have on the environment as the world began to become aware of climate change.

In 1985, the botanical enthusiast began farming organically on a 300-hectare farm on the estate of his country residence. He later even launched an organic label. His activities earned him the nickname 'the potato king'.

Charles is involved in a number of environmental projects through various foundations such as the NGO WWF, of which he has chaired the UK branch since 2011. His commitments have earned him ridicule from the British press. The media also raise his contradictions and speak of a big spender who warns about waste or a man who castigates greenhouse gas emitters and who does not hesitate to use his private jet for his travels. Every year, the king publishes his carbon footprint. Thus, we know that he and his wife are responsible for the emission of 3,344 tons of CO2. While an English person emits an average of 8,805 tons of CO2 per year (lempreintecarbone.fr).

In 2020, he called for a profound change in the economy "to put nature at the heart of our functioning", at the World Economic Forum in Davos. Now king, Charles III will no longer be able to express his political opinions as required by protocol, but will he be able to?

Although Queen Elizabeth II spoke of her son on his 70th birthday as "a devoted and respected heir to the throne", winning the hearts of the British people is proving difficult. His mother was extremely popular, but the new king is not extremely popular. Popularity will be even more complicated to win as Charles does not accede to the throne at the best of times, as the United Kingdom is experiencing one of its greatest economic crises and is facing the desire for independence in Scotland and Northern Ireland.
