Emmanuel Macron announces France's withdrawal from the Energy Charter Treaty

Writer's picture: JulesJules

This convention, decried by climate activists, allows energy industry giants to turn against signatory states if they pursue climate policies unfavorable to their investments.

The French president, Emmanuel Macron announced this Friday at the end of the European summit in Brussels the withdrawal of France from the Treaty on the Energy Charter (TCE), approved in 1994.

Following the recommendations of the High Council for the Climate, which estimated in an opinion that France and the EU should get out of the ECT, 30 years old this treaty decried by climate activists is incompatible with "decarbonization schedules" provided by the Paris Agreement.

However, the EU had obtained in June that this little-known convention be reformed, because it is too protective of fossil fuels. But, the NGOs judged the compromise insufficient and ask the Europeans to withdraw from it.
