This Friday, Russia announced to carry out fortification work in Crimea, annexed region, after the replacement of its soldiers in the region of Kherson who face a counter-offensive from Kiev.
"Fortification works are carried out under my control on the territory of Crimea to ensure the safety of the Crimeans"
"Fortification work is being carried out under my control on the territory of Crimea to ensure the security of Crimeans," said Sergei Aksionov, the governor chosen by Moscow after the region's annexation in 2014.
However, he stressed that Crimea's security depended "mainly on measures to be implemented on the territory of the Kherson region," a region adjacent to the peninsula in southern Ukraine.
This announcement comes a week after the humiliating retreat of the Russian army, after failing to contain a counter-attack of the Ukrainian army, armed by the West. This retreat forced the Russian soldiers to leave the capital of the Kherson region bearing the same name, allowing Ukrainian forces to bring its guns closer to the Crimea already targeted several times in recent months.
In October, the Crimean bridge, which connects the peninsula to Russian territory and is used to supply the armed forces, was partially destroyed in an attack attributed to Kiev by Moscow, which mentioned a truck bomb. Other attacks attributed to Ukrainian forces have also been carried out in Crimea, such as attacks against the Russian fleet in Sevastopol and against several Russian military infrastructures in the region. Since the annexation of Crimea in 2014, Moscow considers it to be part of its territory, a view not shared by the international community. In addition, Kiev has made it clear several times in recent months that it wants to retake the peninsula.

Since the departure of Moscow troops a week ago, Kiev says it deplores "atrocities" in the many alleged cases of torture carried out by the Russian army during the eight-month occupation of the city of Kherson. According to the deputy head of the presidency who visited the region, Kyrylo Tymoshenko, "the Russians not only killed, mined, but also stole from our cities." The national railroad company, for its part, announced the reopening of the line connecting the capital Kiev to Kherson.
Russia continues to regularly attack Ukrainian energy infrastructure depriving some cities in the country of electricity and water. "Restrictions on several hours are imposed throughout Ukraine during the day," said the national electricity operator.
For its part, the Russian Ministry of Defense insisted that the strikes of the previous day aimed at military and energy infrastructure, had completely destroyed the targets. Among them was, according to the ministry, a missile manufacturing plant and an arms depot "delivered by Western countries". According to the statement, the Russian army also claimed to have conquered the town of Opytene in the Donetsk region of eastern Ukraine.
The death toll from a Russian bombardment on Thursday on the town of Vilniansk in the Zaporizhia region (central-eastern Ukraine) rose from seven to ten, including two children, according to the Ukrainian prosecutor's office.
